misconceptions

A few years ago, my brother emailed me an mp3 file about the different ways that word fuck can be used in the English language, as noun, verb, adjective. In the audio clip a man with with a very strong Indian accent discussed the word fuck in a very deadpan manner much to the delight of the audience. Based on the delivery and the audience’s laughter, I had assumed that the segment was from some sort of comedy club or broadcast.

Fast forward to yesterday when I mentioned  my last fuck post to Keith. “You know” he said, “it is a very useful word in the English language”. This triggered a memory of that comedic audio file, long since lost in a hard drive failure. I fired up YouTube and proceeded to throw some keywords in the search engine until I found it.

I looked at the face of the man on the thumbnail and thought, man, he looks familiar. Then I saw the name.  I was floored.

I have recently read a few of Osho’s books on zen, and listened to one of his talks about buddhism and meditation while knitting one day.

It struck me hard that these two, the irreverent comedian and the deeply spiritual teacher, could be one and the same. And I realized I was as guilty as the next guy for putting labels on a person based on outward signs. I’ve always loved the look on kids’ faces when they realize that this ploppy middle aged woman rides a bike. I’m sure I had that same look on my face. It’s the slightly shell-shocked look of someone who is rapidly rearranging her pre-arranged conceptions.

Anyway, here’s the clip. It’s quite funny in it’s own right.
