I’m not teaching for most of this week as I’m communing with my people. Three days surrounded by people who speak the same language I do, who grok what I’m trying to do because they’re trying to do it to.
Three days of hanging out with geek teachers. Three days of not being the only geek in the building. What bliss.
Today I had a full day seminar on this nifty little free program called Scratch, created by the big minds at MIT so that little minds can get a taste of computer programming in an easy to learn and fun environment. And man, is it fun….I can’t wait to show it to all my little geeks-in-training.
The seminar was hosted by the IBM software lab north of the city, one of those IT complexes that seem to sprout up in areas that not that long ago were farms. This one sits along the Rouge River, and from the window of the training area I could see paths and benches along the bank that looked like a good place to sit and write for a while, to listen to the breeze rustle the dry oak leaves too stubborn to fall with the rest.
It was one of those golden days, with not a cloud in the sky. Thankfully so; I had no other way of getting up there except by bike. The sun was deceptive though. Zero degrees Celcius made itself known pretty damn quickly even through two layers underneath the cold weather gear I bought for Alaska.
I may never be warm again, but it was worth it to get on two wheels in the sunshine one last time for the year.
